System on chip design (TEMPUS) (4+1)

1. General information

The embedded systems are combination of hardware and software and are usually designed to control device, process or a larger system. Examples of such systems are: ABS control systems in cars or systems that control the operation of the car engines, automatic pilot in the airplanes, chipset in digital TV, chips for telecommunications equipment, ambient devices and control systems in nuclear reactors. The significance of these systems is growing continuously. For example: in 2003 there were about 8 billion such devices around the world, conservative estimates predict that the number of these devices are expected to double by 2010. In other words, for every citizen of the planet there would be 3 such devices. In the automotive industry, the percentage of participation of electronics in the total value of the car is expected to grow by 22% in 1997 to 30-40% in 2010. These challenges can be successfully monitored and enforced only by producing new generations of students with proper knowledge in the field of embedded systems.
